DIXON

The Dixon family are inter-woven with the COATES, in the sense that two of the nine daughters of Michael COATES and Margaret WELFOOT married two Dixon brothers. This is illustrated in the tree below where both familes can be seen on both sides of the tree. David is descended from Elizabeth COATES, a daughter of Michael COATES and Margaret WELFOOT, and it is Elizabeth’s two sisters Rachel and Hannah who married into the DIXON family, to James and John respectively.

The first tree shows the descent from George DIXON and Sarah GREENWOOD, where it can be seen that a third Coates, Sarah, marries Ralph, but she is not the sister of Rachel and Hannah and I am still trying to work out which Sarah she is, as there is another with the same DoB and death year married to William in the second tree. The second tree shows John and Hannah’s daughter Margaret and her own daughter Hannah Simpson marrying back into the DIXONS!

Confused? You might well be. They are difficult to disentangle.
