ECKERSLEY
I have got back to Mark ECKERSLEY who was born in 1754 and Betty STONES b 1755 . This is relatively recent to find them, as I struggled sorting out our Giles, there being two Giles ECKERSLEYs born in the same year in the same village.
I have not yet sorted out all the descendents of Richard and Mary, these will be added in due time.
I think Jane MAGEE must descend from people in Northern Ireland, but she claims to have been born in Bolton; however so far there haas been no birth to find, but keep looking, something will turn up!
Map of the centre of Bolton focussing on White Lion Brow based on the ordnance survey of 1892-1914, 25”, courtesy of The Genealogist website. Lily Bamber was born at 24 White Lion Brow in 1888, which is shown by the black arrow. In the 1881 and 1891 censuses, Richard Eckersley and his wife Mary Ridyard were living at 30 White Lion Brow, shown with the blue arrow whilst Robert Bamber and his wife Hannah Eckersley are at number 24 during the same two censuses. Hannah is Richard’s daughter.
They were clearly surrounded by industry, including sawmills, a foundry, bleachworks, iron works, cotton mills. Number 30 is at the very bottom of the dip, and after that the road becomes Chorley Street. It must have been noisy, dirty, fumey, and generally very unhealthy.
Only the few houses at the top of White Lion Brow where it turns off the main road, still exist today. The old Fire Station on the main road is now flats. .
